Usage Statistics

The Objective

  • Subscriptions to e-resources are generally expensive. Detailed usage statistics by title, collection or publisher across all user groups are therefore necessary in order to measure changes in the usage and the quality of the offerings.
  • Detailed usage analyses must be generated based on the total usage of individual titles, title collections or publisher's catalogs. Only in this way can the decision to renew or cancel subscriptions be based on solid data, or costs be justified to the source of funding.
  • If the e-resources are partially or completely financed by payments from the end users, then reliable, detailed usage data for each user or user group must be logged and retrieved.

HAN provides the solution:

Centralized, COUNTER-compatible usage statistics over all publishers: For each e-resource, extensive statistics are recorded and are retrievable for analysis, including the time and duration of use, the user and station names, the volume of data transferred (number of bytes), the number and types of documents opened, and search statistics. The data is presented in a uniform format in accordance with COUNTER standards. Because HAN manages all access to all e-resources centrally, statistics can be generated even on individual users' access to all publishers' resources. These statistics can serve as the basis for invoicing or cost accounting, and as a reliable basis for decisions to renew or cancel subscriptions.
