User Authentication, User Identification

The Objective

  • Due to the high value of e-resources and the contractual obligations involved in using them, you must ensure that only authorized users can access the e-resources through the subscriptions that you manage.
  • If certain e-resources are only of interest to (or have been paid for by) individual faculties, departments, or working groups, you should make sure that only the users in that group or organizational unit have access to the e-resources.

HAN provides the solution:

Automatic user authentication, single sign-on: HAN supports user authentication and allows administrators to grant or restrict specific users' access rights to e-resources. The following user authentication databases are supported: Microsoft NT domains, Microsoft Active Directory Service, Novell NDS, LDAP for Microsoft and iPlanet, SISIS, PICA (LBS and CBS), and ODBC. As a special feature, HAN can also authenticate users by their client IP addresses. When this technique (called "single sign-on") is used, the users no longer have to authenticate interactively. This security concept ensures that only members of the organizational unit that subscribes to the e-resources can access them.
